The Promise of Science Site (i.e. the National Dissertations Site, NPS) is a repository for Dutch dissertations. The Promise of Science project was set up in order to encourage PhD candidates to deposit their dissertation in this repository.
The project developed the Communication Toolkit to help institutions approach scientists and scholars – both directly and via stakeholders – so as to encourage them to include their dissertation in the repository.
The Toolkit contains texts, examples, and semi-finished products for each target group, allowing an institution to make a choice and then adapt the material to its own situation. The Toolkit is therefore not a manual for drawing up a communication plan but a set of building blocks that can be used to communicate with target groups or that can be fitted into a communication plan.

Although the Communication Toolkit was developed for the acquisition of dissertations, many of its elements and communication proposals are also relevant and applicable to the acquisition of publications in general.
