A number of different legally relevant moments can be identified in the work process that ultimately leads to a (digital) dissertation. SURF has developed a schedule of action to clarify the process of saving a dissertation and making it available via an institutional repository.
For each component of that process, the schedule gives an explanation of:
- the “intellectual property”, indicating whether one is dealing with actions that are subject to copyright, for example duplication or publication;
- the action that is necessary to make the dissertation as openly accessible as possible.
This information forms part of the “legal aspects” work package that was developed as part of the Promise of Science project. The aim of the project is to make dissertations, and the primary data that relate to them, as openly accessible as possible.
