Relationships between parties in the “Copyright Landscape”

The Copyright Landscape distinguishes between the following types of relationship:

  • Let’s assume that you are a member of the academic staff of a university. You have produced a publication and you want to have it included in the university’s repository. You want to know what arrangements need to be made as regards copyright.
    > You have a relationship with the university (i.e. the institution) where you work, which is in charge of the repository.
    > Click on the Author-Institution relationship.
  • Let’s assume you have written a scientific/scholarly article and you want to have it included in an online periodical. You want to know what arrangements need to be made as regards copyright.
    > You have a relationship with the publisher of the online periodical.
    > Click on the Author-Publisher relationship.
  • Let’s assume you are the author of a number of different publications and you want to stipulate what someone else is permitted to do with them. You also want to know what arrangements you need to make if you publish them in a journal or if you have your publications included in a repository.
    > You have a relationship with the user.
    > Click on the Author-User relationship.
  • Let’s assume that a member of the academic staff at your institution writes a scientific/scholarly article and wants to publish it in an online periodical. He also wants to have it included in the institution’s repository. The identity of the copyright holder needs to be clarified and you also want to know what arrangements you should make regarding publication.
    > You have a relationship with the author.
    > Click on the Institution-Author relationship.
  • Let’s assume that your institution wants to arrange a licence with a publisher for the use of an electronic periodical. Your institution needs to know how that should be done.
    > You have a relationship with the author.
    > Click on the Institution-Publisher relationship.
  • Let’s assume that your institution has set up a repository and you want to know what arrangements need to be made regarding the use of the scientific/scholarly material included in the repository.
    > You have a relationship with the user.
    > Click on the Institution-User relationship.
