The recently published December issue of SURF magazine contains several articles with news and background information about ICT in higher education and research. SURF04 contains the following:

  • Pathology professor Wolter Mooi at VUmc makes extensive  use of online aids in his teaching. He stays in touch with students through social media and a lot of  his lectures can be found on YouTube and iTunes U. His conviction: if a maximum number of students can have access to the best lectures available, educational institutions have to compete for the favour of the online student.
  • By making internal educational information available via open interfaces, it can be shared and accessed in a variety of ways, for example via mobile apps. Tilburg University and HZ University of Applied Sciences tell how they work with open educational data.
  • The new oil for the knowledge-driven economy, that’s another way of addressing accessible research data. In the Netherlands we work together on a national level  to accessing  scientific  data, says Ana Meegen, chair of the Special Interest Group Research Data.
