Scholarly Communication - Enhanced publications
Status: Completed

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) – one of the research institutes of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) – wants to give greater publicity to interesting research results in its field. In close collaboration with NIAS researchers, some of those results will soon be published as “enhanced publications” (EPs). Researchers are increasingly asking NIAS staff to help them create such publications, which combine text and data. This project is meant to show NIAS fellows what is possible with enhanced publications.

Aims
The “Enhanced NIAS Publications” project has the following aims:

  • to assist fellows to create enhanced publications;
  • to determine what type of collaboration is necessary to create enhanced publications, and with which parties;
  • to promote modern types of publication so as to do justice to the results achieved by NIAS fellows and to show that NIAS can offer its researchers a challenging research environment;
  • to experiment with EPs with a view to developing policy for the future.

Results

  • A well-received seminar on enhanced publications for NIAS fellows took place in March 2011. The NIAS project was presented, and representatives of DANS and SURFfoundation explained the “Veteran Tapes EP” project and the background to enhanced publications;
  • A report on the background to the project was published in the NIAS Spring newsletter;
  • A showcase with an enhanced publication was produced;
  • The data has been deposited with DANS. The dataset also includes the PDF. The data has been allocated the following ID: urn:nbn:nl:ui:13-6zh0-jl.
