Results
In 2010, SURF began a number of pilot activities in the field of green ICT and sustainable development in higher education. These projects assist higher education institutions that signed up in 2008 to the long-term energy consumption agreement to implement a 2% energy saving each year. The projects involve collaboration between SURF, SURFnet and SURFdiensten (i.e. SURF) with Agentschap NL and the Sustainable Higher Education Foundation (DHO).
Results of pilot activities
The results of the pilot activities at nine higher education institutions were presented at the first national symposium on green ICT and sustainable higher education in November 2010. One of the presentations dealt with a Survey of ICT sustainability in higher education in 2010. The survey showed that higher education institutions can make a reduction of more than forty percent in the amount of energy consumed by the ICT equipment at their workstations and data centres.
