SURFsara is looking for a Unix system administrator (senior or otherwise) for its Data Preservation Services group with a demonstrable affinity for storage and data management.

What does the position entail?

The Data Preservation Services group provides secure and reliable storage facilities and solutions, including a nearline mass storage system with 40 petabytes of saved data.

What will you do exactly?

  • Proactively manage, monitor and maintain complex computer and data management systems and solve complex problems.
  • Design and implement new management concepts and tools.
  • Provide technical support for data-based projects, both domestically and internationally.
  • The senior position also requires you to coordinate projects.

What we want

Professional experience with and an academic/vocational level of thinking and working in relation to the following:

  • UNIX/Linux operating systems
  • scripting languages (e.g. Python, Perl, shell scripting)
  • optionally, programming languages (C, Java)
  • computer networks and network protocols.

Knowledge of or experience with the following would be advantageous:

  • Hierarchical or tiered data management systems (such as SGI DMF, Oracle SAM-QFS) or back-up server environments (such as IBM TSM)
  • tape libraries and tape drives (such as Oracle/SUN or IBM)
  • SAN (e.g. Brocade) and SAN attached storage
  • large-scale storage environments (> 500TB)
  • distributed, cloud or clustered file systems (such as CXFS, GPFS, Lustre, Ceph, OpenStack SWIFT).

What we offer

  • Salary: dependent on expertise and experience up to level 10 on the pay scale (max. €4,028 gross per month) for the senior position based on a 38-hour working week
  • Holiday pay: 8%, fixed year-end bonus: 8.3%
  • Holiday entitlement: 29 days a year (full-time basis)
  • Reimbursement of travel costs: up to 45 kilometres, one-way
  • ABP pension
  • The initial contract is for a period of one year.
