About SURF

SURF is the collaboration organisation for IT for Dutch education and research. SURF works with educational and research institutions on IT facilities and IT innovation in order to make optimum use of the opportunities afforded by digitisation.

You will work in the Innovation Core Team, with a focus on innovative IT technology that can be applied within higher education and research. The core team focuses on the application of new technologies and methods in various fields. In doing so, we contribute to the goal of facilitating Dutch research and education at top level in the world with top facilities and relevant expertise.

What does the job entail?

As a technical developer and advisor, you will work with SURF colleagues, research communities, and users within the Dutch universities, universities of applied sciences, and knowledge institutions. You will identify improvements to existing IT applications and new possibilities. You will be able to quickly convert these into working prototypes and, if they prove to be of potential value, to carry them out in pilots together with users of the SURF infrastructure. You are creative, enjoy puzzling, and have hands-on experience and expertise with various programming models and frameworks. You enjoy dealing with all aspects of data processing, both in terms of teaching and research.

What are you going to do exactly?

Your tasks will in any case include

  • Working with colleagues and experts from the institutions on various projects that may lead to new SURF services;
  • Designing and developing proof-of-concepts and prototypes for new systems, applications, and services for our members
  • Setting up pilots with external users in order to identify the actual potential of new systems, applications, and services
  • Researching the reusability of existing solutions, possibly also through international examples;
  • Monitoring, exploring and initiating new (technological) developments and (open) standards;
  • Demonstrating and documenting prototypes and/or pilots, both within and outside SURF;
  • Close collaboration with colleagues regarding technical possibilities and the wishes and requirements of both research and educational users;
  • Complying with SURF guidelines for open source development, privacy, and security when developing prototypes and pilots.

We ask

  • HBO/WO work and thinking level;
  • At least 3 - 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • Affinity with and enthusiasm for educational and research innovation and the design and construction of prototypes, possibly leading to new technical services;
  • Experience with (open source) software development and development methodologies in an innovative environment;
  • Knowledge of and experience with privacy by design and security by design;
  • Technical and tactical insight, combined with a healthy dose of pragmatism;
  • Independent go-getter with a results-oriented approach, with an eye for applicability of solutions and ideas;
  • Team player with good communication skills and persuasiveness;
  • Up-to-date hands-on programming experience on computer clusters, cloud technology, internet of things and edge computing;
  • Hands-on experience with Linux and (Docker) containers is a plus;
  • Knowledge of the most important concepts, protocols and standards in use within higher education is a plus;
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages, web technologies and front-end development is a must; knowledge of Python or Scala is a plus;

We offer

  • A varied and challenging job for 32-40 hours (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) in an informal and collegial atmosphere with a high level of ambition;

  • This position has a salary range of € 3.676 to € 6.034 gross on a full-time basis;
  • 8.33% holiday allowance, a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%
  • 36 holiday days per year (on the basis of a 40-hour work week);

  • Our Utrecht office is located at walking distance from Utrecht CS. Our Amsterdam office is located at the Amsterdam Science Park, with good public transport facilities nearby.
  • Initially, the contract will be for one year, with the intention of converting to a permanent contract after one year.
