About SURF and the Architectural Council Higher Education team

SURF is the collaboration organisation for IT for Dutch education and research. SURF works with educational and research institutions on IT facilities and IT innovation in order to make optimum use of the opportunities afforded by digitisation.

AB HO is the platform on which higher education institutions collaborate to develop working with architecture within the institution. AB HO helps governors, directors, and managers to make better decisions based on overview and insight, with the aim of steering towards a coherent organisation of the institution and the higher education sector as a whole.

Higher education (HE) institutions are increasingly faced with increasing complexity in the provision of information and digitalization of their education, research, and operations. Developments at institutions such as internationalization, making education more flexible, research in consortiums, mutual collaboration and information exchange, valorization, and digitization of business processes contribute to this complexity, but also developments in IT such as cloud computing and mobile computing, or in the legal area with privacy laws and regulations. To manage this complexity in the provision of information and digitization, in the light of the strategic objectives of the institution, Architecture and the use of standards provide the necessary support.
