We are looking for a (Junior) Specialist / DevOps Engineer for our Distributed Data Processing team with knowledge of Linux and Cloud technology and affinity with complex computer and data processing systems.

About SURF and the Distributed Data Processing team

SURF is the collaborative organisation for IT for Dutch education and research. SURF works together with educational and research institutions and communities to develop ground-breaking IT innovations.

Our Distributed Data Processing team consists of a diverse group of colleagues with one common goal: to add value to scientific projects through the use of advanced ICT infrastructure, innovative technology and excellent services. Our target groups face the challenges of transport, storage and processing of petabytes of data in the shortest possible time. For this purpose, they use our platforms with which we not only offer powerful and modern infrastructure, but also support with parallel workflow systems and data management designs for optimal application for each specific problem. Some of our projects have additional requirements in terms of privacy, data sharing and dissemination, post-processing, collaboration, or other requirements that each require a specific approach; if necessary, we will even build a complete environment that is tailored to the requirements of a single scientific project.

To achieve all this, we work closely together in a multi-disciplinary team that uses state-of-the-art services and solutions, focused on the efficiency and impact of our scientific users.

What does the job entail?

The tasks of the (Junior) Specialist / DevOps Engineer consist of (proactively) managing clusters and cloud infrastructure, monitoring and maintaining complex platforms and solving technical problems. In general, there is always a drive for improvement, resulting in optimal operation and availability of systems, but also aimed at new functionality and/or a better performance. Designing and implementing new service management concepts and tools and providing technical support to (user) projects are part of the job. You will be working in an inspiring environment where you can learn a lot and where there is also room to experiment, take initiative, and build up your own interests and expertise.

What are you going to do exactly?

  • Participate in one or more DevOps teams
  • Take part in operational management shifts
  • Participate in the development of features or complete custom solutions
  • Working with Linux, scripting, CI/CD, cloud technology, schedulers, monitoring, databases

We ask

  • HBO/academic level of thought and work
  • Good understanding of and/or experience with Linux/UNIX operating systems
  • Mastery of one or more scripting languages (e.g. Python, Bash, Ruby)
  • Your qualities/skills also include customer focus and independence, and a good command of the Dutch and English languages (in word and writing). You are flexible, enterprising, eager to learn and like working in a team

You have an advantage over other candidates with:

  • Experience with or interest in cloud middleware and distributed environments.
  • Experience with or interest in managing cluster or cloud based services.
  • Experience with automation and CI/CD (e.g. Ansible, Terraform, Git).
  • Experience implementing and managing containers (e.g. with Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of and experience with project organisation and project-based working.

  • This position has a salary range of € 3.676 to € 5.252 gross on a full-time basis;
  • 8.33% holiday allowance, a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%

  • Our Amsterdam office is located at the Amsterdam Science Park, with good public transport facilities nearby.
  • Initially, the contract will be for one year, with the intention of converting to a permanent contract after one year.
