About SURF and the Team Expert Networks (TEN)

SURF is the collaboration organization for ICT for Dutch education and research. SURF works with educational and research institutions on ICT facilities and ICT innovation in order to make the most of the opportunities offered by digitization.

The Expert Network Team is responsible for the architecture and development of SURF's network and for the proactive and complex aspects of network management. Important pillars are network architecture and engineering, infrastructure development, network design, complex network changes, problem, capacity, release and security management, and the testing and production of new services.

What does the position entail?

The SURF network is based on a fiber network of about 12000 km with an extensive DWDM network and IP/MPLS network on top of it. On this network we provide Internet and Ethernet based services to our member institutions. It provides high-quality national and international connectivity for our target group. We have the ambition to be leading in the application of new network technology in our network, so that users can benefit from new possibilities in education and research. Securing a stable service to our institutions is in our genes.

You will be working in a team of 8 people; 2 technical product managers and 6 network engineers. You will work proactively to improve network management and the quality of SURF's network. By testing new possibilities at an early stage you make innovations in the network possible. The daily management of the network (NOC) has been outsourced to a third party, with which you will collaborate closely.

Because failures can be escalated to our team, 24x7 availability is essential. This may also be necessary for the execution of complex changes outside regular working hours. For this purpose, each engineer in the team will participate in an availability shift, in which the engineer is on-call for one week. This amounts to 1 week of on-call duty per 6 weeks.

To do this job well, you obviously have a passion for networking. And of course, a network engineer in this day and age cannot do without a good foundation in software and scripting. You are eager to learn and always looking to improve your own skills and knowledge.

What will you be doing exactly?

Your duties will include at least:

  • Assisting with or implementing complex network changes;
  • Resolving complex network disruptions in collaboration with the NOC and vendors;
  • Coordinating or contributing to the problem-, capacity-, release- and security-management processes;
  • Ensuring the availability and ongoing development of the network management environment;
  • Testing new functionalities in our test network and ensuring that they are implemented in standard service models (automated where possible);
  • Documenting the setup of the network and management environment.

We ask

  • In-depth knowledge of modern network protocols and techniques, including BGP, ISIS, MPLS-SR, EVPN;
  • Broad knowledge and experience with IP/MPLS network equipment and software; Experience with Juniper hardware and software is a plus;
  • Good knowledge and experience with DWDM networks preferred. Experience with Ribbon (ECI) equipment and software is a plus;
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of network monitoring and management systems; Experience with Juniper Northstar, Cisco NSO, InfluxDB, Grafana is a plus;
  • Knowledge and experience in network automation, systems (VM, Docker), scripting (python and yaml/xml) and APIs is a plus;
  • Experience troubleshooting complex network problems and management software. Includes the necessary collaboration with vendors.
  • Service and customer orientation;
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English.

Furthermore, you are result oriented and can work independently as well as in a team.

We offer

  •  A varied and challenging job for 32-40 hours (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) in an informal and collegial atmosphere with a high level of ambition;
  • SURF offers extensive training opportunities and excellent fringe benefits;
  • This position has an indicative salary of € 3,535 to € 5,802 gross based on full-time employment;
  • 8.33% vacation allowance, a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%;
  • 36 vacation days per year (based on a 40-hour work week);
  • An NS Business Card 1 class;
  • Our office in Utrecht is located at walking distance from Utrecht CS;
  • Initially, this is an appointment on the basis of a one-year contract, with a view to permanent employment if the performance is satisfactory and the company conditions remain unchanged.
