About SURF and the Strategic Relation Management team

SURF is the collaboration organisation for IT for Dutch education and research. SURF works with educational and research institutions on IT facilities and IT innovation in order to make optimum use of the opportunities afforded by digitisation.

The Strategic Relation Management team is working to match the range of services provided by SURF to the needs of Dutch research. The future-proof development of national infrastructure facilities is taking place as part of a joint approach by the institutions and SURF. Together, we will organise the preconditions for the long-term accessibility of those facilities. From a neutral perspective, we establish links between the researchers, the institution, and innovation and services at SURF. The Strategic Relation Management team is aware of what is going on, maintains an overview, and communicates this within and outside SURF. Sustainable collaborative relationships are established.

As Strategic Advisor for Research Relations Management, you will work in both Utrecht and Amsterdam and will work closely with external contacts at OCW, NWO, and sector associations, and contacts at academic affairs and research IT at knowledge institutions. Internally, you'll work closely with the Executive Board, MT members, research account managers, and SURF's finance department.

What does the job entail?

You will give direction to Relation Management within SURF at the strategic and tactical level in an inspiring and connecting way. You will manage the achievement of the strategic and tactical objectives of the account management cluster and provide functional leadership to the employees in the research account management cluster. You will do this with the aim of contributing to SURF's broad objectives, which are to create value for its members. Together with your team, you will contribute to the implementation of SURF's strategy. In collaboration with the Services Department and the Innovation Department, you will position SURF for strategic developments in the digitisation of research and create support for this in the surrounding area.

What are you going to do exactly?

  • You will ensure broadening of the structural governance conversation with members to bridge the gap between SURF's activities and their impact for digitization of research, with a particular focus on the IT infrastructure for research. You are 20% leading, and 80% of your time working on content.
  • You are in structural discussion with the sector associations of SURF's members: UNL, NFU, VH.
  • You contribute to a long-term funding perspective for the IT infrastructure for research, in collaboration with NWO and OCW.
  • You will work on developing Strategic Relation Management within SURF as the pivot for structural collaboration between members and colleagues in SURF's services and innovation.
