SURF Research Week is the national conference about research and ICT. The first edition of this new, larger, multidisciplinary event will take place in the afternoon from 13.30 to 17.00 on 13, 14 and 15 April 2021.
Programme SURF Research Week
The first programme is ready! We will update the programme on a regular base. Follow our socials or subscribe to the SURF newsletter to stay posted.
Tuesday 13 April
Today's themes will be Challenges in Data Processing and HPC Landscape each theme will have 2 sessions during this day.
Challenges in Data Processing
Data is fuel for scientific discovery and in a lot of cases, it’s ‘the more, the better’. But, gathering data and dealing with data is not always straightforward. In this theme we will go into scenarios where data is complex and scattered across different locations. And we will discuss challenges (and opportunities) in the data-driven field of applied artificial intelligence (AI) for research.
HPC Landscape
Modern scientific research increasingly requires large computing capacity and the ability to handle enormous amounts of data. This is reflected in the fast evolution of deployment of High-Performance Computing systems, services and collaborations on institutional, national and pan-European level, as well as through public and private clouds. The current HPC landscape is diverse, access routes and conditions for researchers vary, and collaborations on various levels are built and needed. In this track we discuss this HPC landscape from various viewpoints and perspectives.

We Live to Support Research
To ensure researchers can focus on their work, research support teams handle complex challenges in the areas of data management, policies, security, and ICT. On this day , we put the spotlight on these vital support efforts. Also, to honour the research supporters, we will award a prize to the ‘SURF Research Support Champion’ for the first time.

Thursday 15 April
Today is devoted to these 2 themes: Open Science & Collaboration and Fearless Data Sharing, Across Borders.
Open Science and Collaboration
Open Science moving forward for all research! Whether it is of the fundamental kind, or the kind that aims to be applicable in society right away. Open Science doesn’t magically appear though; changes and effort are being put in. However, the close collaboration between policy makers, infrastructure providers, research supporters and of course researchers can make open science easy, fun and better! We will show you in two completely different sessions. Come join the open science and collaboration track and ill show you just how.
Fearless Data Sharing, Across Borders
Sharing data safely and efficiently is difficult. However, being able to share data effortlessly when different researchers collaborate together, but also contribute independently, is becoming increasingly important. The exploration of scientific knowledge demands collaboration and data sharing across disciplines and across the borders, of our institutions or countries. Historically, sharing data in these contexts has been difficult and error prone. In this session we will share thoughts and solutions to data sovereignty and introduce you into the most important European projects that work on solutions for fearless data sharing, across borders.

PARALLEL SESSIONS Open Science & Collaboration: The Impact of Open Applied Science Speakers: Eva Woertman, Wim Rill and Danae Bodewes Fearless Data Sharing, Across Borders: Data sovereignty: dare to share! In this session, our speaker Michiel de Jong, an independent developer who uses crowdfunding and (European) grants to work on open source technology will present his story: Connected but Sovereign, with Federated Bookkeeping. ‘Read access requires trust. Write access requires consensus.’ says Michiel. His talk will be followed by a round table interview with special quests about ‘how do you dare to share’ hosted by Sara Ramezani from SURF. You will hear more about knowledge of methods being used or developed to protect data sovereignty, while facilitating the use of your data by others. Speakers(s): Michiel de Jong, Annette Scherpenzeel, Freek Dijkstra, Andre Dekker with host Sara Ramezani |

PARALLEL SESSIONS Open Science & Collaboration: Identify Yourself! We will present you with the case of ORCiD, an author identifier. The university libraries have run an awesome campaign to help researchers get their own ORCiD, to save time and identify themselves and their research to the world. An informational Identifier quiz and inspirational practices and stories from the campaigners from the research libraries. Speaker(s): Fabiana Visentin, Felix Weijdema and host Suraya M. Farah-Gaeta Fearless Data Sharing, Across Borders: Data Backpacking through Europe It will do so by federating existing scientific data infrastructures, which are currently dispersed across disciplines and EU member states. Over the past years numerous projects have been working on turning this vision into a reality. In this session we will share some of these projects with you, show you their impact on the services of SURF and show how this will make your life as a researcher (a little bit) easier. Speaker(s): Bob Jones, Narges Zarrabi, Ron Trompert, Raymond Oonk and Mark van de Sande |
