Research into 5G
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the amount of mobile data being transmitted. New technology is essential if the required capacity in the mobile network is to be provided over the long term. This is why SURFnet is looking into 5G.
The successor to 4G, 5G, marks the latest generation of mobile communication. 5G is faster, can transmit more data, is more reliable, and guarantees a longer battery life. The rate of delay in the network is also much lower with 5G. Research needs to be carried out in order to gain insight into the specific possibilities of 5G.
For this research, SURFnet is collaborating in the 5Groningen project with institutions including TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research), KPN (Royal Dutch Telecom), the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. 5G applications will be tested in a number of pilots with a view to ultimately connecting North Groningen to the future. Research will for example be conducted into applications in the field of healthcare and agriculture.
