Klaas Wierenga recorded in the Internet Hall of Fame, for his work with eduroam

We are so proud! Our former colleague Klaas Wierenga was admitted to the prestigious Internet Hall of Fame today for the creation and development of eduroam. He did this together with Paul Dekkers when he worked at SURFnet. Klaas now works at GÉANT.

Internet Hall of Fame

The Internet Hall of Fame-award publicly honours visionaries and leaders who have made significant contributions to the development and improvement of the global Internet. Klaas Wierenga will be joined by internet celebrities such as Vint Cerf and Jon Postel (founders of the modern internet), Linus Torvalds (the inventor of Linux) and Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the WWW), and of course 'Internet Hall of Family Predecessors' are at SURFnet Kees Neggers and Erik Huizer.

Everyone in research and education knows eduroam. You can use it at more than 30,000 locations in more than 100 countries. Every year, eduroam logs on to a Wi-Fi network 4.3 billion times. A few years ago, we also used our knowledge and skills to set up govroam, the 'government-little-sister' of eduroam.
