    News - The second release of the SURFnet Network Dashboard is now available. This release allows you to set up light paths between MSPs (Multi Service Ports) yourself without the SURFnet NOC having to be involved. This functionality is available to all institutions with an MSP.

  • Extremely high capacity (400 Gbit/s) for education and research in the Netherlands

    News - On Friday, June 9th, SURFnet together with ECI Telecom and Tallgrass deployed a 400 Gbit/s connection between Breda and Utrecht. This is the first step in the implementation of SURFnet8. With 400 Gbit/s, this new direct link offers extremely high capacity for education and research in the Netherlands.

    News - OMREN, the Oman National Research and Education Network (NREN), is now connected to the NetherLight open light path exchange in Amsterdam from the country's capital city, Muscat. The direct 1 Gbit/s link provides OMREN with new opportunities for international collaboration.

  • Relocation of Paris PoP brings new opportunities for international collaboration

    News - The relocation of our PoP to Interxion's data centre in Paris will open up new opportunities for international collaboration. This new location will allow us to use the third ANA-300G link and to supply GÉANT with alien waves.

  • In discussions with qualified bidders over SURFnet8 service layer

    News - The qualification phase for the new tender for the SURFnet8 service layer ran until 31 January 2017. Having evaluated the bids, we selected six qualified partners with whom we will discuss the most suitable solution for our service layer.

  • Setting up light paths using the SURFnet Network Dashboard

    News - The beta version of the second release of the SURFnet Network Dashboard is being tested by a number of institutions. Users in 'infrastructure manager' roles are assessing the latest functionality: setting up light paths between Multi Service Ports (MSPs). After a test period, this functionality will be available to all institutions with an MSP.

    News - Every year, the experimental SCinet network is built for the SC-conference (Super Computing). SCinet is with 3Tbps the fastest network in the world. SURF contributed to build SCinet and used the network for a demo of network function virtualization.

  • ECI delivers new photonic layer for SURFnet network

    News - Following the award of the tender in October, on 16 December ECI and SURFnet signed a contract for the photonic layer of the SURFnet network. The next generation of the SURFnet network, SURFnet8, will feature ECI's extremely high-speed (100 Gbit/s) Apollo platform for optical channels and the latest ROADM technology.

  • New tender for the SURFnet8 service layer published

    News - The new tender for the SURFnet8 service layer was published on Thursday 1 December. SURFnet is looking for a partner that will provide network equipment and software for the SURFnet network service layer. Suppliers can respond to the tender until 31 January 2017.

  • ECI Telecom wins selection for optical layer of SURFnet8

    News - A tender for the optical layer of SURFnet8 has been awarded: ECI Telecom was selected as the best candidate. In 2017, ECI Telecom and SURFnet will start migrating the present optical network, after which the institutions will be able to count on 100 Gbit/s connectivity and automatic recovery of optical channels.

  • Contract signed with Eurofiber for supply of managed dark fibre connections

    News - On 28 September, SURFnet and Eurofiber signed a 15-year contract for the supply of managed dark fibre connections. These connections make up a large part of SURFnet's optical fibre network. This basis enables us to continue to provide innovative ICT solutions to meet the demands of education and research.

  • India's research network connected to NetherLight

    News - The National Knowledge Network (NKN) in India is now connected to NetherLight, SURFnet's open lightpath exchange. Dutch teaching and research institutions can now exchange data at high speed with more than 1,600 universities and research institutions in India.

  • Microsoft ExpressRoute now available directly through SURFnet

    News - Institutions connected to SURFnet can now link their institution's infrastructure directly to the Microsoft cloud with SURFlichtpaden. SURFnet is working under the agreement that the European umbrella organisation GÉANT concluded with Microsoft. GÉANT is the first non-commercial party in the world with direct links via ExpressRoute.
