Unique closed-loop program for recycling electronic waste

SURF has selected Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS) as it’s e-waste recycling vendor. SRS will ensure that all our electronics are responsibly redeployed, remarketed or recycled. SRS will also be our partner for closing the loop on electronic waste: for every piece of hardware SRS sells for a second life, the buyer hands in comparable components for recycling.

Electronic equipment that is at the end of its useful life at SURF is sent to SRS for disposition. Where possible assets are refurbished and made available for resale as whole units in a unique, closed-loop programme. They are resold to end users, who are obliged to trade in their own used electronic assets in return, thus receiving a discount on their purchases. For every unit that is sold a comparable unit is handed in for responsible recycling, one-for-one.

This innovative partnership optimises the usable life of SURF’s equipment as well as encouraging reuse and attracting more volume of materials for recycling. If reuse is not economically feasible the units are broken down for reusable parts and components or shredded to recover and recycle base materials for remanufacturing.

Electronic waste from SURF might consist of servers, storage hardware, or network equipment from the datacenter. Before the equipment is recycled, all data is wiped. SURFsara is committed to taking full responsibility for the IT assets they use. The goal is reducing e-waste to zero.

“There is a huge demand for sustainable e-waste solutions for datacenter equipment. As the collaborative organisation for ICT in Dutch education and research, SURF supports education and research institutions in making their IT more sustainable. This includes the sustainable disposal of hardware. We encourage people from research and education institutes to exchange knowledge with us on this subject.”
Leonieke Mevius, community manager corporate social responsibility at SURF
“SRS is delighted to work with SURF on this project. SURF’s pledge to incentivise the return of e-waste in addition to managing their own end of life equipment demonstrates their commitment to sustainable and responsible electronics use. It’s a simple way to contribute to managing the world’s e-waste problem and one that many organisations could adopt”.
