SURF was working on Project SURFnet8, the goal of which is to further develop the fixed section of the national education and research network. Both layers of the SURFnet network – the optical layer and the service layer – have been upgraded.
Implementation SURFnet8
Both layers of the SURFnet network - the optical layer and the service layer - have been renewed when SURFnet8 was implemented. In 2018, we will complete the implementation of the optical layer, end 2020 we finished implementing the service layer.

Time line implementation SURFnet8
Implementation optical layer
We started the implementation process in 2017, together with ECI Telecom - the supplier of the new optical layer. In 2017, we migrated the first branches and carried out (almost) all the installation work. We expect to complete the implementation of the optical layer in the second quarter of 2018.
Implementation service layer
We started with the migration work for the SURFnet8 service layer after fully implementing the new optical layer in 2019. Together with subcontractor Quanza and Telindus, the supplier of the SURFnet8 service layer, we divided the process into three phases: core locations, metro rings and city rings.
