Send and receive large files quickly, safely and easily
Send large files safely
Researchers and other institutional employees needed a safe service for sending their large files. That's why SURF developed SURFfilesender, a service with which researchers, employees and students can send research data and other confidential files safely and quickly.
SURFfilesender: for every file format
Users can send extremely large files containing details of their research such as genome sequences or astronomical observations. But SURFfilesender is also suitable for smaller files such as reports.
Safe and reliable using encryption
With SURFfilesender, files are sent safely. The uploaded files are stored in the Netherlands for no more than 21 days. Although SURFfilesender is safe as it is, users are able to opt for extra security: files up to 2 GB can be sent using encryption. Users give the recipient a password, for example by telephone or SMS, to open the file. In this way the user can determine who is allowed access to confidential files.
Fast and user-friendly
SURFfilesender is extremely easy to use. Users don't have to install anything in order to send and receive files. The sender and recipient need only a modern browser. SURFfilesender is connected to SURFconext, so that users can log in with their institutional account. Guest access is also possible, to enable the safe exchange of files with individuals without a SURFfilesender licence.
As per 2019 there is no extra charge for SURFfilesender because it is covered by the fixed connection charge for SURFnet.
SURFfilesender communication kit
SURF provides SURF toolbox, a communication kit with various ready-made communication resources that institutions can use to roll out a campaign within their own organisation. These resources stimulate staff to safely send files via SURFfilesender. The communication kit contains offline and online materials in Dutch and English that participating organisations can download for free.
Getting started with SURFfilesender
SURFfilesender is made possible by SURFnet and SURFmarket and is available to all institutions affiliated with SURFnet. Institutions can then make the SURFfilesender service available to their users. Is your institution interested, or do you want more information about SURFfilesender? Request a SURFfilesender licence through SURFmarket, or contact William van Santen for answers to your questions.
As per 2019, this service is included in SURFnet's core package.
