Futuring
New technologies like AI, XR, edge and quantum are enabling impactful applications. What does this mean for education and research institutions? With futuring, we look ahead and respond faster and more efficient to new developments. In this way, we jointly make better strategic choices for the future.
Futuring at SURF

Let's continually ask ourselves 'what if' and continue to explore the future. After all, it is not about predictions but being able to imagine the future.

Future Campus project: scenarios for tomorrow's campus

Can you still teach tomorrow's education on today's campus? Education has evolved considerably over the past century and the world around us is also changing rapidly. Yet the campus has remained almost the same. With the Future Campus project, we are looking for the answer to the question: what will the campus look like in 2040?

Anticipating the future

Societal, educational, and technological developments influence how the campus is used. Central questions include: what might the campus look like in 2040? What will we do online and what on location? And how will those environments look? Together with experts from various disciplines and students, we are working on future scenarios. With these scenarios, we can better anticipate the future. We bring together what is happening in the field of campus innovation and engage in discussions with institutions about the campus of the future. This exploration is a one-year project and will run throughout 2023, which will be followed by a second project Future Campus 2.0 in 2024.

Goals

In the project Future Campus we want to collaborate closely with the educational field and all important stakeholders to create a future vision of the campus that optimally serves our goals, namely:

  • Inspire the sector and en encourage campus development
  • Anticipating the future, focused on continuity
  • Strengthen the national knowledge base surrounding campus development
  • Connecting to promote collaboration and knowledge sharingaanzetten tot campusontwikkeling

Project approach

The project has a phased approach using various design thinking and futuring methods. Two major working methods are also central; the 'Double Diamond' approach and the future method 'Scenario building'.

Future Campus 2.0 and call

After the success of the first Future Campus project, in which we presented four future scenarios, we will focus on more knowledge sharing about the campus of the future in the coming year. We are again looking for students (teams) who will work on projects within Future Campus 2.0.

What kind of assignments should you consider? Last year, four Fontys student teams validated the future scenarios drawn up among MBO, HBO and WO students. With success, because their results even found a place in the final report of the first Future Campus project!

Who are we looking for?
We invite creative and motivated students (teams) who want to explore campus development and innovation. We determine the content of the assignments in consultation together with the teams.

Contact us at futurecampus@surf.nl and provide a brief description of your proposal or idea! We will then quickly schedule a meeting to discuss the content further and arrive at a concrete project.

Let's shape the future of education together!
