We focus on understanding and assessing new computing paradigms and ideas to accelerate scientific research together with the SURF community.
HPC Architectures (innovation project by SURF Lab)
SURF seeks to understand the potential of emerging computing architectures to accelerate scientific workflows, by analysing non-conventional HPC architectures.
Technology assessment
The aim of this project is to analyse emerging non-conventional HPC architectures and actively engage with the community to understand the feasibility for scientific research. The main objective is to understand the potential of emerging computing architectures to accelerate scientific workflows, to closely collaborate with SURF members and simultaneously provide access and provisioning to experimental resources.
Our main activities
We strive to:
- Obtain insights & analysis into emerging computational architectures;
- Work from a use-case driven approach in evaluating emerging architectures and their impact on research;
- Provide experimental access to enable collaborative experimentation and expertise development;
- Organize workshops and webinars and to write position papers to share knowledge among the SURF institutions;
- Align with European initiatives, vendors and technology providers on development of HPC architectures and to develop joint roadmaps.
Current collaborations
Firstly, TU Delft, UvA, and SURF are jointly working on a proposal exploring heterogeneous computing with field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), GPUs & CPUs. Secondly, SURF and AMD are working together to make HPC applications available on the experimental AMD GPU hardware platform and support experimental access and use cases.
