Create reproducible research environments

As a researcher or research supporter, you can create a workspace for a specific research project. But how do you keep track of what you have installed in this workspace? And what if you want to reuse the workspace later with some minor adjustments?

Research Cloud is based on the principle of infrastructure-as-code. Research Cloud catalogue items are human-readable scripts that can be stored as different versions. When executed within Research Cloud, they deliver the research environment exactly as specified by the configuration file. The specified research workspace can consist of IaaS, PaaS or SaaS resources and can contain datasets, so you can rebuild your workspace at any time. Or you can choose to reuse only certain parts of the script to generate a new workspace for a new research project.

Use the best facilities for your research

For your research, you might have specific compute or storage requirements. With Research Cloud, you can manage HPC Cloud machinesand connect to Research Drive. Connections to iRODS instances at SURF will also be available soon. Commercial cloud providers via SURFcumulus and on-campus OpenStack solutions will be added to the options available in Research Cloud in the future. So you can always choose and combine the best computing and storage infrastructure for your research.

Secure collaboration

Researchers increasingly collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and across institutional and national boundaries. How do you offer your colleagues secure access to the research environment? SURF Research Cloud makes this authentication simple. SURF Research Cloud is integrated with SURF Research Access Management, an authentication & authorisation infrastructure-as-a-service.

SANE: a secure environment for analysing sensitive data  

Do you want to carry out research using sensitive data, for example for social science or health research? SANE is a secure environment in which researchers can analyse sensitive data, whilst the data provider retains full control over the data. You can use SANE within the SURF Research Cloud.

For storing, using and sharing this data, with a total size of about 250 GB, SURF Research Cloud proves to be a fast and secure solution.
