SURFnet selects eight cloud providers for Dutch education and research
Pan-European tender for affordable and secure IaaS services
07 NOV 2016
In the coming months, SURFnet is set to sign contracts with 8 providers that will provide Dutch education and research institutions with affordable and secure IaaS cloud services. Following a major pan-European tender, Dutch institutions can use IaaS services through SURFnet for the next 4 years without needing to issue their own calls for tenders.
During a major pan-European tender for cloud infrastructure services, the European umbrella organisation GÉANT selected a total of 23 providers. GÉANT issued the call for tenders on behalf of the NRENs (National Research and Education Networks) of 36 European countries. Consolidating the demand of the NRENs and the 10,000 institutions that they connect creates a substantial digital market in which up to EUR 500 million can be channelled through the framework contracts resulting from the GÉANT tender
No need for individual tenders
All of the cloud services selected satisfy national and European regulations, and the 10,000 institutions can use these services via their NREN for the next four years without needing to issue their own calls for tenders. Amazon, CloudSigma, Dimension Data, Interoute Communications, KPN, Microsoft, NTT Europe and Vancis will all offer their cloud services via SURFcumulus, SURFnet's hybrid IaaS service.
