Open science in the Netherlands receives a major boost thanks to funding for 45 projects

Open Science NL is awarding more than 35 million euros in grants to 45 projects that strengthen the infrastructure for open science in the Netherlands. The projects make scientific data, software, and publications more accessible and contribute to more open, transparent, and inclusive research. SURF is contributing to 6 projects.

Diversity of the open science field

The 45 projects awarded funding clearly demonstrate the diversity of the open science field. They include expanding the Research Software Directory and linking institutional research archives to make Dutch research results easier to find. Other projects make data from the world’s largest telescopes publicly available or use AI tools to improve the reproduction of research results. The projects also focus on both existing and new infrastructure, as well as specific and generic infrastructures.

Overview of 35.5 million euros in grants awarded

Open Science NL received nearly 175 proposals. A total of 6 million euros was awarded to 25 smaller projects. An additional 20 large projects have a total budget of nearly 30 million euros. A complete overview of all these smaller and larger projects, along with a brief explanation, can be found on the Open Science NL website.

Projects to which SURF contributes

SURF plays an active role in the following 6 projects:

  • Infrastructures for Diamond Open Access in the Netherlands
  • Broccoli – The Dutch hub for 'healthy open research information
  • DURF – Dutch Repository Federation
  • Project Hippocampus – A collaborative infrastructure for AI-driven research
  • Next generation publishing: advancing the publish-review-curate model
  • Yoda as connecting infrastructure for seamless open science

The impact of these projects varies, but generally they all contribute to an infrastructure that enables open science practices. Many of these projects focus on improving coherence between existing tools, platforms, and workflows, making open science easier to implement.
