Issuing digital certificates to learners

edubadges is the platform for digital certificates, including microcredentials, for the Dutch education sector. An edubadge provides learners with proof of their knowledge and skills, within a secure and reliable platform provided by SURF, that remains accessible to the learner.

Advantages

Recognition of learning outcomes achieved

With an edubadge, learners demonstrate that they have acquired certain knowledge and skills either within the mainstream accredited education system or during a non-formal education pathway.

Lifelong development

The edubadges are linked to eduID, a cross-institutional identity that lasts a lifetime for the learner.

1 platform for Dutch education

The national platform allows edubadges to be comparable, interchangeable and stackable.

Learners privacy first

Through the platform, learners give their explicit consent to the use of their personal data to issue the edubadge and can decide whether and with whom they want to share the edubadges.

Easily check authenticity

Any edubadge issued, shared with an external party, can be checked for authenticity at the touch of a button.

Why edubadges? 

Developments in society call for a more flexible educational ecosystem. Learning pathways are becoming more diverse, and learners are increasingly taking modules at different institutions. More and more professionals are also finding their way to educational institutions, often not for a full degree programme, but for a single module. edubadges help to make individual learning pathways more transparent.

Receiving and awarding edubadges

Students collect all the edubadges they have earned in the edubadges backpack. From the backpack, they can share one or more edubadges with employers or other educational institutions. This can make the transition from study to work easier, as well as switching between study programmes.

The future of edubadges 

Edubadges and other forms of microcredentials have a recognisable and identifiable value within students’ learning pathways, which they can choose and follow themselves. We are working on the further development of edubadges, partly to contribute to the ambitions of the Npuls programme regarding microcredentials.

SURF is also collaborating at European level on the development of a new digital ecosystem for education. In this way, we are accelerating innovation and ensuring that education systems in various European countries become increasingly interoperable. International students are already being awarded edubadges at Dutch institutions. edubadges is also involved in the eduwallet project run by Npuls
