Good to know for researchers: you can once again apply for computing time via NWO and SURF

Do you need computing power in 2026 for complex and data-intensive research that exceeds the computing capacity of your own institution? Then apply for computing time on the national high-performance computing facilities, such as the Snellius supercomputer, LUMI, Grid and cloud.

Through the new 2026 computing time call, you can apply for computing time, data storage and the necessary supporting expertise on these systems: the Snellius supercomputer, Data Processing (Grid/Spider), HPC Cloud (via SURF Research Cloud) and the European supercomputer LUMI.

Small and large computing time applications

You can submit small computing time applications to SURF on an ongoing basis. Large computing time applications must be submitted to NWO. Want to know exactly how much capacity is available? You can find all details on the Access to compute services page.

Changes regarding data management and sustainability

These things are different from last year:

  • The data management plan will become part of the assessment process. Applicants must therefore submit the data management plan at the same time as the proposal itself, rather than afterwards.

  • Cloud Research Consultancy is no longer included in the call. Would you like to use this service? You can contact SURF directly.

  • There is a greater focus on sustainability. Good data lifecycle management and efficient use of code contribute to responsible energy consumption of our computing facilities and storage capacity. We ask researchers to take this into account in all phases of their proposal and research.

A detailed explanation can be found in the terms and conditions.
