SURF AI coming soon for education and research

How can we integrate (generative) AI into education, research and operational support in a safe and responsible manner? SURF AI is the solution developed by SURF and Npuls. SURF AI comprises the AI hub and the eduGenAI chat application. This will provide institutions with an AI solution based on the key public values of autonomy, transparency, freedom of choice, privacy, inclusion, equality and independence.

The AI hub and eduGenAI: a powerful combination

The AI hub forms the technical infrastructure of SURF AI, connecting applications, users and various language models (open weight) in a secure and responsible manner.

Institutions decide for themselves who is granted access to which language models. Existing applications, for researchers, for example, can be linked to the AI hub via open standards. eduGenAI is SURF AI’s chat application. eduGenAI enables lecturers, students and researchers to use the available language models responsibly via the AI hub. 

Working more safely with GenAI together

eduGenAI enables us to learn from one another about the use of generative AI in education and research within a safe and reliable environment. Educational institutions retain control over the use of AI and will, in due course, decide for themselves which open-source and commercial language models they wish to make available within their institution. 

Continuous joint development, from code to policy

SURF AI will continue to be developed in collaboration with educational institutions even after its launch. This ensures the service remains aligned with existing and future needs and requirements. We aim to make joint decisions and collaborate effectively across all areas, from the code itself right through to policy.
