News - Higher education and research institutions certainly have sustainability on their minds, as evidenced by the projects now starting in SURF's annual Sustainability & ICT Innovation Scheme. Under this scheme, institutions submit innovative, sustainable IT proposals to SURF which awards prizes for the best proposals. The 4 winners have been announced.
News - SURFnet is investigating the possibilities of an Ethernet local area network (ELAN) within the SURFnet network. An ELAN is a virtual private LAN. ELANs are used to connect multiple locations.
News - As of 1 July the SURFsara website is integrated into SURF.nl. The websites of SURFmarket and SURFnet were integrated when SURF.nl was launched 18 months ago; SURFsara is now following suit. All SURF operating companies have the ambition to further improve web communication and provide access to their mutual know-how in a more integrated fashion.
News - From September news from the SURF bureau and the operating companies SURFmarket, SURFnet and SURFsara will be published in one joint newsletter. Separate newsletters will no longer be published. Although SURF is combining all the different newsletters, you can still receive news only on topics of interest to you.
News - Four videos have been created on the new functionalities available in SURFnet7. Early 2015 marked the completion of the transition to SURFnet7. All institutions are now connected to the latest generation SURFnet network. Watch the videos.
News - In the past eighteen months, SURFnet has been collaborating with TNO on Software Defined Networking (SDN) as part of the CoCo project. This project was completed at the end of April. In assessing the project, GÉANT's Open Call Team had high praise for CoCo and we are proud of that.
News - Four new services have been connected to SURFconext: the TelcoView telecom service, the provider of Spend Control and eProcurement solutions PROACTIS, the online platform RemindoToets and the iBabs app.
News - The annual reports for the SURF bureau, SURFmarket, SURFnet and SURFsara have been published. The reports look back on 2014, a year of many achievements for SURF on behalf of and in cooperation with affiliated institutions.
News - We are pleased to announce the addition of four new services to SURFconext: Nederlab, with a search function for digitised texts in Dutch; CompLing, a linguistics service; the Converis research information system; and e-care, an online absence management information system.
News - GRNET (the Greek NREN) has added its ~okeanos IaaS cloud service to eduGAIN, making the service available for free as a test platform and enabling users from the European education and research community to use ~okeanos to run virtual machines (VMs). SURFnet is already experimenting with ~okeanos.
News - Researchers need a way to make data easily accessible. Ideally, this could be achieved via a generic infrastructure for the controlled sharing of data at a Pan-European level. Recently, the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) and the Resource Entitlement Management System (REMS) were both made available via SURFconext.

News - Enlighten Your Research Global is a program organised for the second time by 12 national research and education networks (NRENs). Researchers are invited to submit a proposal for the edition of 2015.
News - The Horizon 2020 programme is part of efforts by the European Commission and the Dutch government to encourage science and innovation in the business sector and academic world, thereby boosting Europe's competitiveness. SURFnet is taking part in a number of Horizon 2020-approved projects.
News - GÉANT, the European network for education and research, will soon be using a large quantity of extra alien waves on SURFnet’s Cross Border Fiber between Amsterdam and Hamburg. This will enable the costs of the fibre-optic cable and the optical equipment to be shared with GÉANT.
