Felienne Hermans is keynote speaker at SURF Onderwijsdagen 2026
According to Felienne Hermans, education professionals must ask themselves not only what technology makes possible, but also what kind of world we are creating: “Who benefits from it? Who suffers as a result? What values are embedded in it? And who actually decided that this is the direction we should be heading in? Not every new technological development is automatically something that education needs to embrace.”
Felienne’s keynote speech explores what it means to be human in the age of digitalisation and AI. Her message is: “We don’t have to adapt to technology: we decide for ourselves what role technology plays in our education.”

Felienne Hermans is Professor of Computer Science Education at VU University Amsterdam. She plays a prominent role in the public debate on digitalisation, programming and AI. She is known for her positive stance on digital sovereignty and for putting people at the centre of the digital age. In 2017, she won the SURF Onderwijsward, a prize for pioneers in the fields of innovation, vision and collaboration.
