New collaboration for next generation network across research and education
Future-proof architecture
To be able to meet future challenges in research and education, we need to develop and innovate the SURF network continuously. We designed a new network architecture and will start replacing the network in various phases over the next few years.
The new network architecture, network technology, and procurement strategy is a crucial step in the development of the SURF network. It will provide higher capacity, predictable performance, stronger security and the freedom to scale without being tied to a single vendor.
New network, new hardware
Within the new network architecture our network backbone and border domains will be built using HPE routers. The border domain will consist of peering nodes and the NetherLight global exchange point to connect to other networks.
By implementing the newest wavelength technology from Salumanus the SURF network will be able to deliver 800GE, 400GE and 100GE ultra-high-speed connectivity eliminating the need for separate transponder hardware, minimizing power consumption and space utilization while significantly reducing capital and operational costs.
The contribution of the latest technology from HPE and Salumanus combined, enables us to increase our capacity directly from the new routers over a long distance.
Together with Nomios and Quanza
In this process we work closely with Nomios to assist in selecting technology partners on behalf of SURF. Together with Quanza we will implement the next generation SURF network infrastructure.
About Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)
Hewlett Packard Enterprise delivers innovative networking and security solutions that power connections for enterprises, service providers, and public sector organisations worldwide. July 2, 2025, HPE announced the successful completion of the acquisition of Juniper Networks. For the new SURF network HPE is selected to deliver the backbone and border domain network equipment.
About Salumanus
Salumanus provides advanced optical networking solutions across Europe, specialising in DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology and transceiver technology. For the new SURF network Salumanus is slected to deliver the coherent transceivers.
About Nomios
Nomios is a leading European provider of cybersecurity and secure networking solutions with broad experience in various sectors, including education and science. As SURF’s preferred network supplier and intermediary, Nomios gives us the flexibility to choose the most appropriate network equipment and supplier per domain or network layer.
About Quanza
Quanza provides network solutions and managed services to organizations whose IT infrastructures have no room for downtime. As SURF's network management partner, Quanza is responsible for the Network Operations Centre (NOC) and 24x7 monitoring of the SURF network.
