SURF takes the next step with Nextcloud: broad internal roll-out as an alternative to big tech
By doing so, we reinforce our role as a testing ground for public, open-source alternatives that better align with our public values. Nextcloud is open source and offers capabilities for word processing, document sharing, email integration, and online meetings.
Sharing knowledge through a Special Interest Group
To ensure that the knowledge and experience gained are not limited to SURF alone, we are setting up a Special Interest Group (SIG). In this group, together with our members, we will explore alternative solutions to current big tech offerings and examine how we can collectively take steps towards a future where public values are central. Exploring broader use within the cooperative
In addition to internal use, we are also exploring whether this solution can be applied more broadly across the cooperative. Specifically, we are investigating the possibility of expanding SURFdrive — currently used for secure file storage — into a fully-fledged collaboration environment based on Nextcloud technology. This proposal is currently being developed and will be discussed before the summer with a delegation of our members in the SURF Portfolio Advisory Committee.
Through these initiatives, we are actively working to gain experience with open-source applications that are more closely aligned with the public values of our cooperative.
