These are the Research Support Champions 2025
The awards were presented on May 20 during SURF Research Day. For the fifth time, the awards honored research support professionals who drive innovation, inspire colleagues, and make a visible contribution to the quality of research through their work.
Winner in the category universities
Raoul is a research (software) engineer at Utrecht University. He plays a central role in developing and implementing smart IT solutions for research, with visible impact both nationally and internationally. The jury was impressed by the many concrete examples of his contributions at the national level.

Renate Mattiszik
Winner in the category universities of applied sciences
As a data librarian and data steward at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Renate built a solid foundation for research support, which is now an inspiration for the entire sector. The jury praised her vision and perseverance. Thanks to her efforts, not only has research support improved, but colleagues have also become actively engaged in open science and data management.

Ernest Bošković
Winner in the category UMCs & research institutes
Ernest is an Electronics Engineer at UMC Utrecht. He combines technical expertise with excellent communication skills, making him an important bridge between researchers and technology. With dedication and expertise, he manages to make complex issues understandable and translates them into practical solutions.
Colleagues about Ernest: "Ernest ensures that technical solutions closely align with the needs of researchers by actively engaging in dialogue and adapting designs with flexibility."
People's choice award
In addition to the regular awards, the people's choice award was also presented. During SURF Research Day, visitors could vote for their favourite SURF Research Support Champion. Renate Mattiszik emerged as the winner and received bouquet of lego flowers as a gift.

Researchers cannot do without good support. Whether in data management, IT or open science - the work of research supporters is the silent force behind many successful research projects. This is precisely why it is important to make their impact visible. The Research Support Champion Awards give visibility to their work and offer a podium to innovators who really make a difference within their institution and beyond.
