Too many applications to manage? Kubernetes is the answer

You manage the applications for part of your institution, and the number is constantly growing. Does this sound familiar? Then Kubernetes is for you. This technology automates application management, making it scalable and more reliable. In this episode of SURFshort, discover why Kubernetes is becoming increasingly important for education and research, and how SURF is using it.

This podcast is in Dutch.

In this podcast, Niels Weijers talks to Marco Kerstens, a data processing expert at SURF. You’ll find answers to questions such as: What is Kubernetes and when do you need it? Where do you start if you want to use it? And why is it relevant right now?

Sovereignty and cybersecurity

Because Kubernetes is open source and containers are easy to move, organisations can seamlessly migrate applications between cloud providers or to a Dutch or European environment, without remaining dependent on a single US provider.

With the growing threat that vulnerabilities can be exploited at lightning speed, rapid patching is crucial. Kubernetes helps with this: at SURF, new versions containing a security patch are rolled out automatically and immediately as soon as they become available.
