What you need to know about... Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs)

By sharing data, we accelerate scientific progress, although this isn’t always straightforward. How do you maintain control without hindering other researchers? Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) make this more feasible. Our expert Freek Dijkstra explains how it works.

This podcast is in Dutch

More and more data is being collected, and we can learn more and more from it. By sharing data, we accelerate scientific progress, although this is not always easy at present. Many of these datasets are often not easily accessible to others. Yet only a few per cent of confidential datasets are reused in scientific research, even though they can be highly valuable for research.

Freek Dijkstra explains how we at SURF consider the factors involved in a data owner’s decision to make data available to the scientific community or not. Based on this, he seeks a solution to make the data accessible in a privacy-friendly way. Privacy Enhancing Technologies make it easier for data owners to share (research) data whilst retaining control over it.
