    DTL Programmers meeting

    Event - On 17 April SURFacademy and the Dutch Techcentre for Life sciences (DTL) held the DTL Programmers Meeting. The presentations during this seminar varied from new developments in the area of programming languages to the exchange of practical tips for applications in Life Sciences.

    Kick-off Interest Group Compute Resources for Life Science Research

    Event - On 20 January 2015, the kick-off of the joint SURF-DTL interest group "compute resources for life science research" was held. The meeting was intended for IT managers, "big data" bioinformaticians and scientific programmers. In this interest group, we discuss the requirements, use cases, and models to scale out compute resources.

    Well-attended Life Science e-infrastructure Workshop 2014

    Event - On 13 November 2014, SURFsara's yearly e-infrastructure workshop for life science research was held. Aim of the workshop was to inform life science researchers and bioinformaticians on the available national e-infrastructure, its roadmap for development, as well as to exchange experiences on the usage of e-infrastructures.

    SURFsara Data and Computing Infrastructure Event

    Event - On 12 and 13 March 2014, SURFsara organised a Data & Computing Infrastructure Event. The focus of the first day was on "data-intensive sciences", for which SURFsara offers services, such as HPC Cloud, Hadoop and Grid. The second day focussed on "large-scale computing" and facilities, such as the supercomputer Cartesius and compute cluster Lisa.

    DTL Focus Meeting on research data repositories

    Event - On 3 March 2014, the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences (DTL) organised a workshop on research data repositories. The big data era adds to the complexity of data environments. The goal of this workshop was to inform and discuss research data repositories for life sciences.

    4th International Industrial Supercomputing Workshop

    Event - On 23-24 October 2013, SURFsara hosted the Annual International Industrial Supercomputing Workshop (IISW) 2013 at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. This workshop was the fourth in line after the successful events at NCSA (USA), KISTI (South Korea) and HLRS (Germany).

    Life Science e-Infrastructure Workshop 2013

    Event - On 10 October 2013, SURFsara organised a successful workshop for life science researchers, bioinformaticians, scientific programmers, and the DTL community. The workshop was well attended and reflected the growth of the life science community working with big data and thus requiring high-end computing, network and data infrastructures.

    Official Inauguration of new Dutch national supercomputer Cartesius

    Event - On Friday 14 June, 2013, SURFsara organised a symposium dedicated to the official inauguration of Cartesius, the new Dutch national supercomputer at SURFsara. The theme of the symposium was “Computing for the Future”.

    Successful 27th SARA Superdag

    Event - On 19 December 2012, SARA organised the annual Superdag for the users of the national ICT research infrastructure. The 27th Superdag focussed on the "Next Generation Computing in service of Science and R&D".

    Event - On 30 March 2012, SARA and the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC) organised a symposium on data visualization, data exploration and collaboration. Theme of the symposium was Visualization, Exploration and Collaboration, Essential for Research.

    Lisa User Day 2011

    Event - On 6 October 2011, SARA organised the second Lisa User Day. This event, which is complementary to our annual "Superdag", brought together Lisa users - ranging from novice to expert - from diverse backgrounds and the Lisa support team of SARA, to share experiences and expertise in optimally using the Lisa system.

    Huygens User Day 2011

    Event - On 5 October 2011, SARA organised the second Huygens User Day. This event, which is complementary to our annual "Superdag", brought together Huygens users - ranging from novice to expert - from diverse backgrounds and the Huygens support team of SARA, to share experiences and expertise in optimally using the Huygens system.

    Festive launch of the new HPC Cloud infrastructure

    Event - On 4 October 2011, SARA and BiG Grid organised the festive launch of the new national HPC Cloud infrastructure, a user-friendly compute cluster for scientists. There were presentations and demonstrations of scientific Cloud usage. At the end of the day, the new HPC Cloud infrastructure was festively inaugurated.

    SARA host of second EPIC User Forum

    Event - On 12 and 13 April 2011, SARA hosted the second EPIC User Forum. The EPIC consortium is a joint venture of CSC (Helsinki, Finland), GWDG (Göttingen, Germany) and SARA (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). It aims to offer European scientists a Persistent Identifier (PID) infrastructure.
