Interconnected solutions for health research
SURF presents at 3rd Health RI conference for research infrastructure
19 DEC 2017
Health research enables the development of personalized approaches in health care and medicine. SURF supports the mission of Health RI, the Dutch infrastructure for personalized medicine and health research. At the 3rd Health RI conference, SURF presented interconnected access and analytics solutions for shared data and applications.
Health RI conference
On December 8th, 2017, the 3rd Health RI (research infrastructure) conference was held. The conference was co-organised by SURF and attended by more than 350 participants. The Health RI initiative is endorsed by more than 70 organisations, including research institutions, patient organisations, companies, governmental organisations, and research funders. The collaboration of these partners is essential to establish a solid health research infrastructure. In the parallel session ‘biomedical research tools, big data analyses, and collaborative IT platforms’ Peter Michielse, CTO SURFsara, presented the latest developments and opportunities in ‘Collaborative ICT Research Infrastructure Life Sciences and Health’. In addition, demos and posters on solutions that facilitate the Health RI infrastructures were presented.
Sharing resources and services
To facilitate research in multi-site studies, e.g. at several academic medical centres, data and analytics resources need to be shared. SURF works on Proof of Concepts (PoCs) to enable controlled access to data and services such as applications and HPC clusters. This includes the SURF innovation projects Federated Identity and Access Management (FIAM) and Research Cloud. These PoCs have been developed in co-creation with the research community, BBMRI and NFU Data4lifesciences. Other innovation projects build federative application services with the health research community.
Current solutions such as data processing platforms for large patient cohort studies and a secure and high performance network to transfer data between research institutes were presented as well.

SURF-Health RI partnership
The Health-RI business plan to assemble all stakeholders and create a sustainable infrastructure, was presented. Health RI will build on existing infrastructures such as BBMRI and TraIT, in which SURFsara contributes as a partner in service delivery and development. SURF supports the mission of Health RI by continuing developing and providing infrastructure and research services for life science and health research.

About Health RI
The development of novel personalized health solutions requires the integration of highly diverse collections of longitudinal health and biomedical data, generated at different hospitals and research centres. In Health-RI, the common goal is to interconnect these biomedical resources, empowering researchers to develop better personalized medicine and health solutions. Health-RI is the interconnected infrastructure for personalized medicine & health research in the Netherlands.
The Health-RI conference was organised by BBMRI-NL, DTL, EATRIS-NL, ELIXIR-NL, Federatie MedischSpecialisten, Lygature, NFU, and SURF.
