Where you will work
SURF is the ICT cooperative of Dutch education and research institutions. Together, we develop digital services and work on complex innovation issues that improve the quality of education and research. We do this in co-creation with the institutions, with an eye for public values, and as openly and open source as possible.
SURF is an environment in which there is much to pioneer technically. You will be given the space to make architectural choices, investigate new technologies and develop proof of concepts into production-ready solutions. You will also work on issues relating to cloud architecture, scalability, security, data integrity and AI ethics. In this way, you will contribute directly to an infrastructure that makes Dutch education future-proof.
The team you will join
You will become part of the Education Innovation team within the Open and Accessible Research & Education department. You will work on a project within the national Npuls programme: EduGenAI. This is a new service that supports educational institutions in using generative AI safely and responsibly.
Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organisation. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organisation, the set-up of the project teams, the culture in our offices and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and a flexible approach to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.
What you will do
As a technical product manager, you are the driving force behind the technical development of this product. You work closely with the product manager and developers. You translate the vision and functional requirements into technical architecture and solutions. You maintain an overview, make technical choices and supervise the realisation and implementation.
In concrete terms, this means the following.
- You design the technical architecture of EduGenAI and translate functional requirements into robust solutions.
- You manage and supervise developers and suppliers, providing technical guidance and monitoring quality.
- You evaluate and implement new open source technologies and AI models, and determine which ones are suitable for scalable application.
- You set up proof of concepts and pilots and develop them into stable production environments.
- You build and maintain a secure, scalable infrastructure that applies privacy-by-design and security-by-default, in accordance with ISO 27001 and AI ethics guidelines.
- You will set up management processes for availability, monitoring, support and further development, so that the service remains operational in the long term.
- You will work closely with product managers, domain architects and experts from educational institutions to embed choices in practice.
Your skills and experience
- You have a higher professional education (HBO) or university education (WO) level of working and thinking and at least 5 years of experience in a technical lead or architect role.
- You have extensive experience with cloud environments, data flows, APIs and AI models.
- You have experience with (open source) software development and modern development methodologies.
- You have an affinity with data-driven innovation and generative AI, and technical insight into the latest developments in this field.
- You have experience with security, privacy by design and ethical issues surrounding AI.
- You have a pragmatic approach: you can switch between experimentation and production environments.
- You have good communication skills and persuasiveness, in both Dutch and English.
SURF takes pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
