Microsoft Engineer
Are you interested in the complex combination of applications, systems, and databases in an international infrastructure? Do you know Microsoft inside out? Do you find it challenging to convert customer questions into tailor-made solutions? And do you want to better support and clarify business processes? Do you take ownership, have a healthy dose of problem-solving skills, and are you decisive? Do you enjoy working in a team? Then you could play a wonderful role as a Microsoft Engineer at SURF.
Where you will work
SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.
Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organization. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organization, the setup of the project teams, the culture in our offices, and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and takes a flexible approach to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.
The team you will join
You will be working in the Internal IT department, in the Operational Support team. This is a fast-growing team within SURF that is responsible for system and office automation, cybersecurity, and service desk services. You will work closely with colleagues within your own team and within SURF, in an informal and pleasant working environment. Together with the team, you will ensure the stability, performance, and security of our services. You and your colleagues will ensure that the infrastructure is continuously improved and that new functionalities are developed. You will do this according to the agile methodology and the scrum framework.
What you will do
As a Microsoft Engineer, you will be jointly responsible for complex Microsoft environments, both in the cloud and (virtualized) on-premises. You will ensure the stability, performance, continuity, and security of the Microsoft environment, with increasingly in-depth interactions with components other than Microsoft.
What else you will be doing
- You ensure the seamless operation of Microsoft environments. You do this by monitoring applications, implementing improvements and taking action to guarantee capacity, performance, continuity and security.
- You have knowledge of Office 365, (A)AD, Intune, Graph-API, links to external tenants, subscriptions and landing zones.
- You have knowledge of on-premises environments such as AD, ADFS, file servers, Windows Server 2019 to 2025, and a hybrid Exchange environment.
- You have knowledge of automation with PowerShell.
- You support Information Management by translating functional questions into solutions. In addition, you set up the management and support processes (ITIL) and documentation properly.
- You regularly analyze incidents in the past period and initiate changes that help prevent incidents. In addition, you improve service by looking at how things can be done more intelligently, including opportunities to transfer activities to first and second line support.
- You actively contribute ideas about further professionalization, development, and automation.
Your skills and experience
- You have a higher education (HBO) or university education (WO) level of working and thinking;
- You have demonstrable knowledge and experience with both Microsoft on-prem servers and the cloud stack;
- You have an affinity with security, hardening, and compliance;
- You have a good command of spoken and written Dutch and English;
- You have experience with project-based work, preferably agile; you also have knowledge of ITIL processes.
- You have experience in an environment where you not only manage, but also contribute ideas about design and direction.
