Over the past ten years, artificial intelligence has played an important role in many kinds of research. It has not only made existing simulations faster through the use of neural networks, but has also helped to gain a better understanding of complex problems.
Progress in new developments has ensured that simulations became larger and faster, even while improvements in computer hardware were slowing down.
Role of SURF
SURF has a solid technical foundation in the field of AI, partly built on years of supporting researchers on Snellius. We want our members in education and research to benefit from the latest developments. That is why we work closely with our members to develop infrastructure and services, share knowledge in specific disciplines, and explore the boundaries of what AI can achieve.
Responsible use of AI
AI is playing an increasingly significant role in our lives. SURF’s AI programme focuses on exploring the potential of AI in research, education, and operations, with an emphasis on ethical principles and public values. We continuously examine how to best develop and use AI responsibly. We do this through building expertise, conducting technical experiments, and developing a joint policy approach. We involve our affiliated institutions to gather needs: collaboration is essential for us to make well-founded decisions about the use of AI.
