Study data & learning analytics

By 2027, institutions, teachers and students are more confident in the responsible use of learning analytics. Based on data, students and instructors will gain insight into the quality of learning and education. In doing so, SURF will have an offering that enables institutions to apply learning analytics reliably, transparently and safely. How will SURF achieve these goals together with institutions?

What challenges do institutions face?

Institutions have a lot of data about their students and are aware of the possibilities that study data offers. Analyzing study data provides insight into students' study progress and helps improve online learning materials. Learning analytics allows teachers to collect, analyze and report data from learning environments to improve student learning. As a teacher you have more control over online study behavior, so that you can support students and prevent dropout. And students receive more and more personal guidance in this way. Learning analytics is useful for students and teachers. However, it is not yet used on a large scale. This is mainly because it is not that easy to actually do that.

Challenges:

What does SURF do to use study data?

SURF facilitates institutions to use study data in a safe and reliable manner to improve their education and better guide students. We do this in close collaboration with institutions and the acceleration zone Safe and reliable use of study data, which is part of the Acceleration Plan of VSNU, VH and SURF. We also work together with the special Interest group Learning analytics.

  • Vision development: we help institutions with their vision and policy formulation in the field of using study data.
  • Service development: we ensure that services from market parties to use study data are available via SURF. If necessary, we have new services developed, or we do so ourselves.
  • Knowledge development and sharing: we offer a meeting place for experts and translate the knowledge they have and the knowledge we gain together into practical tools. We also share this knowledge in an accessible way with anyone who wants to use it.
