Innovation zones: using IT innovation to improve the quality of education and research

In the coming years, the SURF organisation will work with its members to improve the quality of education and research with the aid of IT innovation. We will do this in nine innovation zones. On this page you can read which ones they are and what the current state of affairs or ambition is.

Innovation zone Encourage digital educational resources

By realising a coherent service portfolio for digital learning resources in 2027, instructors and students will be able to put together and use a mix of digital learning resources in one place.

Ambition

By 2027, education (WO, HBO, MBO) in the Netherlands will have, via SURF, a coherent portfolio of services for digital educational resources. This allows our lecturers and students to put together and use an optimal mix of (open and licensed) digital educational resources in one place. SURF’s members are in charge of the pricing and the access and usage conditions for licensed digital educational resources from publishers. Professional communities are encouraged and supported as they create collections of open educational resources. The service portfolio and roadmaps for this priority include edusources, CopyRIGHT, the joint procurement of digital educational resources and the creation of a national support desk. A connection is made with relevant parts of open access in research.

The ambitions of this innovation zone overlap considerably with those of the Digitalisation Impulse transformation hubs. SURF and the Digitalisation Impulse Steering Committee will decide how best to combine forces.
