More than 20.000 SURFdrive users at 48 institutions
19 OCT 2016
The number of users of the personal cloud storage service SURFdrive continues to increase. There are currently more than 20.000 users. Robert Al of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is the 20.000th user.
Secure cloud storage for Innovation Lab
The 20.000th SURFdrive user is Robert Al of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He works at the Innovation Lab, which coaches other entrepreneurs (in the making) among other things. It converts knowledge into products or services. More than ten Innovation Lab employees do this through scouting (collecting ideas from students and researchers), screening (assessing the ideas) and business development (developing the ideas).
Storage capacity and privacy
Robert uses SURFdrive as a personal cloud storage service for his email. He regularly saves his email archive – the core of his work – as PDF files on SURFdrive. This leaves extra capacity in his mailbox and he no longer has to request extra capacity from the help desk. Besides the 100 GB storage capacity, Robert sees privacy and security as the main advantages of SURFdrive. He explains: "This stuff belongs to the boss, and it is sensitive information. When a patent is applied for, the information may not have been published anywhere else, not even in a university magazine, for example. That is why it is particularly important not to disclose this information to anyone else."
Robert also wants to use SURFdrive for sharing files in the future. "I didn't know you could also share files with SURFdrive. I now only really use it for personal cloud storage, but I will certainly look into this and share files with colleagues at the Innovation Lab and other faculties."
SURFdrive at universities (of technology)
Robert Al is one of the 1.253 employees at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) who save files on SURFdrive. At Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), SURFdrive is also being used by more and more employees. With more than 2.400 users, TU Delft is one of SURFdrive's biggest clients. The top 3 also includes the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University with over 2.000 and 3.000 users respectively.
Increasing use at 48 institutions
SURFdrive use is increasing not only at universities, but also at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the VU University Medical Centre. More than 20.000 users are currently using SURFdrive at 48 institutions. In October 2015, there were only 10.000 users. The number of users has doubled in one year – a great result!
