Campus innovation: beyond the blueprint
In this three-part series, we discuss the future of our learning environment. How do we prepare for it? Is campus development indispensable to stay relevant and prepare students well for the field, or is it a luxury we cannot afford in times of austerity? And what if things turn out differently than you had imagined beforehand?
This podcast series is in Dutch.
Is campus development an essential investment to remain relevant and to prepare students for the professional world? Or is it a luxury we simply cannot afford in times of financial restraint?
In this episode, we talk to Christien Bok (Innovation Manager at SURF) and Huib Langenberg (Educational Advisor for Blended Learning at HAN University of Applied Sciences) about why the campus matters and what makes campus renewal necessary. Do they see campus innovation as more than just a trend? Who is actually asking for change, what does it concretely deliver, and what obstacles commonly appear along the way? We also discuss the risks of engaging, or not engaging, in campus innovation. Is letting the campus stand still a wise choice, or does it simply lead to higher long-term costs?
Episode 2 Beyond the blueprint - Not as planned (and why that wasn't a bad thing)
In this episode, we explore how to deal with the difference between your vision and reality when it comes to campus innovations. Do you give space to change without losing sight of the goal? And what if things don't work out the way you thought they would?
We talk with Thomas Esman (Product Manager Smart Campus at SURF) and Merel de Boer (Project Leader New Campus Amsterdam at Inholland University of Applied Sciences). Besides the tension between vision and reality within complex innovation projects, we explore how educational vision, design and organisational change can come together in practice.
Episode 3 Beyond the blueprint - When space is used differently than intended
What if a new space or innovation is NOT used as intended? You have invested time, money and energy in it - and then it remains silent. So has the project failed or does it actually offer opportunities?
This episode, we talk to Sam Neijman (Account Manager Educational Housing at Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Meike Kerkhofs-Welkenhuizen (Project Manager Innovative Learning Spaces at Maastricht University). They will take you through the challenges of matching educational needs, facilities and expectations of different stakeholders. They do this, among other things, through the case study of the completed new university library at Maastricht University-and what can happen when use and design do not quite coincide.
