Kick-off community Open Source Program Office (OSPO)

An Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is a knowledge and expertise centre for open source. There is a call for more open source in education and research. The main reasons are: less dependence on big-tech, application of open standards and making publicly available software funded with public funds.

SURF encourages the setting up of an OSPO within institutions and facilitates an OSPO community. The kick-off of this community is on 20 December from 10:00 - 14:00 at SURF in Utrecht. Come too! You can register via the link below.

Eye for public values with open source

An open source strategy is not a goal in itself. It is, however, a way to give substance to public values such as autonomy and privacy. The Dutch government has an open source strategy: 'Open source working: beyond non-commitment'. Think Open' is the EU's open source strategy.

More and more organisations are setting up an OSPO to give open source a visible place internally and make better use of its opportunities. The EU, the Home Office, the VNG and numerous US universities have already set up OSPOs. And so soon also at (more) Dutch educational institutions.
