Open call hybrid quantum-classical computing

SURF invites researchers from member institutions to apply for financial support and consultancy for the development of hybrid quantum-classical computing cases/applications.

Purpose of the open call

The development of quantum computers has been happening at an increasing pace. As a result, there is a growing need to understand the appropriate scenarios for their use. Early exploration and collaborative design of potential applications is necessary for researchers. Firstly, to understand how this new computational paradigm can impact research, and secondly, to explore how it contributes to a better comprehension of best practices for the entire quantum ecosystem.

The integration of quantum computers and high-performance computing (HPC) has the potential to improve the power of current quantum computing in the short term. It can also accelerate HPC performance in the future by off-loading computationally complex tasks to the quantum computers.

SURF and hardware platform Quantum Inspire are exploring the requirements and bottlenecks of executing hybrid quantum-classical applications. Some of the key questions are: what level of integration is needed? What is the most optimal setting regarding the resource distribution? How should the workflow be orchestrated, managed and deployed?

Do you have a research use case that could benefit now or in the future from off-loading some of the tasks to a quantum computer? Then apply to this open call!

Who can apply?

Applicants need to have a contract in one of SURF's members organizations.

A competitive proposal should:

- Briefly but clearly describe a concrete use case

- Explain the general workflow of the use case/application and describe what type of task you foresee could be executed in a quantum computer

- If you are already familiar with quantum computing, briefly describe the intended approach/algorithm to explore further

What we offer

- Financial support for developing and implementing a use case (up to 85 k€, which can be used, for example, for the salary of a postdoc or PhD)

- Consultancy and discussions with the SURF and Quantum Inspire teams

- Access to the SURF and Quantum Inspire hybrid quantum-classical computing experimental platform

How to apply

Send your brief project description (400-500 words) to ariana.torres@surf.nl. Applications will be reviewed by a committee. The winning proposal will be announced in the second week of November 2023.

Deadline

Deadline to submit your proposal is 1st November.
